Installing I SPY Fantasy

Windows:
1. Insert the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. When the I SPY Fantasy start-up screen appears, click Install.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions for installation.

Note: If the start-up screen does not appear (you may have AutoPlay disabled), double-click the My Computer icon on your computer's desktop, then double-click the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM icon in the My Computer window. Double-click the Fantasy Setup application to install I SPY Fantasy. For Windows XP users, the My Computer icon is located in the Start menu.

Macintosh:
1. Insert the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. When the I SPY Fantasy start-up screen appears, click Install.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions for installation.

Note: If the start-up screen does not appear, double-click the Install I SPY Fantasy icon within the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM window.

Launching I SPY Fantasy

Windows:

1. Insert the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the start-up
screen to appear.
2. Click Play.

Note: If the start-up screen does not appear, click the Start menu, choose Programs, select I SPY Fantasy from the Scholastic's I SPY Fantasy menu. I SPY Fantasy can also be launched using the I SPY Fantasy shortcut, which is placed on your computer's desktop during installation.

Macintosh:

1. Insert the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and wait for the start-up
screen to appear.
2. Click Play.

Note: If the start-up screen does not appear, double-click the I SPY Fantasy icon, which is placed on your computer's desktop during the installation. I SPY Fantasy can also be launched using the I SPY Fantasy icon within the Scholastic's I SPY Fantasy folder on your computer.

Getting Started

Sign in by typing your name on the line. If you have played the game before, pick your name from the list. Click the GO button or press ENTER/RETURN on your keyboard to begin. When you enter your name, the program will automatically save your game. To delete a name from the list, click the name, then press CONTROL + D.

1. Select your name from the list if you have played before.
2. Type your name on the line if you have never played before.
3. Click to start.

Main Menu

Welcome! From this room, choose which fantastical adventure you would like to play. Whether you dive into the Deep Blue Sea, venture into the Sand Castle, or Blast Off from a faraway world, prepare to embark on an amazing journey.

Roll your cursor around the screen. Objects that move are adventures waiting to be discovered. Choose an adventure by clicking it.

To stop playing I SPY Fantasy, click the Quit button that appears on the lampshade.

2. Click to play the Deep Blue Sea adventure.
3. Click to play the Blast Off adventure.
4. Click to play the Sand Castle adventure.

I SPY Picture Riddles

There are 18 unique riddle areas to discover in I SPY Fantasy. No two riddle areas look alike, but they all play the same way. For example, the riddle shown below can be found in the Sand Castle adventure.

Game Play
Listen to the riddle and hunt for the objects listed. Once you find an object and click it, the word in the riddle will turn a different color. Click the Ear to hear the entire riddle again. Click any word or phrase in the riddle to hear it read aloud.

Special Features in Riddle Screens

Flashlight
In the Creepy Cave riddle, found in the Deep Blue Sea adventure, the flashlight cursor allows you to see objects in the dark. Use it to find each object, then click.

Telescope
In the Telescope riddle, found in the Blast Off adventure, the telescope cursor allows you to see objects more closely. Use it to find each object, then click.

Microscope
In the Microscope riddle, found in the Blast Off adventure, use the microscope to help see the objects more clearly. Click on 1X, 5X, or 10X to increase or decrease the magnification of the objects.

Hand Cursor
The cursor changes to a hand in some of the riddle areas when you roll over an object that needs to be moved to a different part of the screen.

Sand Castle Adventure

The princess has been captured and locked in the dungeon of the castle. Are you brave enough to rescue her?

There are six different riddle areas in the Sand Castle adventure. Find the riddles and explore the world by rolling your cursor around the screen and clicking things that move. You'll need to solve the six riddles to earn the six keys that unlock the dungeon gate.

3. Click to enter the sand castle.

Finding the Riddles

You will find the following riddles in each of these locations:

Keys

Upon the completion of each I SPY riddle in the Sand Castle adventure, a hidden key is uncovered. A clue appears at the bottom of the screen that tells you where to find the key. Search the screen and click the key to add it to your collection.

2. The clue will tell you where to find the key.
3. Click for help.
4. Click to return to the previous screen.

Unlocking the Dungeon Gate

The keys that you have collected can be found on the key rack next to the dungeon gate.

You will need all six keys to open the gate. Click a key from the rack and drag it to the lock with the matching shape. Click again to place the key in the lock.

2. This doorway leads to the Wizard's Room.
3. Click for help.
4. Place each key in the matching lock.
5. Click to return to the previous screen.

Defeating the Dragon

Only the magic potion can defeat the dragon. The scroll in the Wizard's Room leads you on a hunt to find the ingredients you need to make the potion. Use the clues on the scroll to determine the location of each ingredient. The ingredients can be found in rooms of the castle, outside of the castle, or within the riddle screens. Once they are all collected, place them in the cauldron to mix your potion. Now you're ready to defeat the dragon!

1. To make the potion, put the ingredients in the cauldron.
2. The clue on the scroll tells you where to find the next ingredient.
3. Click for help.
4. The ingredients you have already found are on the desk.
5. Click to return to the previous screen.

Deep Blue Sea Adventure

There's treasure in the deep blue sea. To find it, you'll need to read the mermaid's book!

There are six different riddle areas in the Deep Blue Sea adventure. Find the riddles and explore the underwater world by rolling your cursor around the screen and clicking things that move. Solve the riddles to earn pages of the mermaid's book. You'll need to solve the six riddles to earn the six pages of the mermaid's book, which will lead you to the treasure.

4. Click to play the Shipwreck riddle.
5. Click to play the School of Fish riddle.

Book Pages

Upon the completion of each I SPY riddle in the Deep Blue Sea adventure, you uncover a page from the mermaid's book. A clue appears at the bottom of the screen that tells you where to find the book page. Search the screen and click the page to add it to your collection.

2. Use the clue to locate the book page.
3. Click for help.
4. Click to return to the previous screen.

Reading the Mermaid's Book

To see the pages that you've collected, look in the Mermaid's Book, which you can find on the table in her room. Read the story to unravel the mystery behind the missing treasure.

1. Click on the text to hear it read aloud.
2. Click for help.
3. Click to turn the page.
4. Click to return to the previous screen.

Finding the Treasure

The mermaid has hidden the treasure and enlisted her sea creature friends to help you find it. Read her book closely to find out which sea creature to look for first. After that, each sea creature will give you a clue telling you what to look for next. They could be on riddle screens or anywhere in the underwater environment. Which one will lead you to the treasure?

Blast Off Adventure

As commander of a space colony, your mission is to blast off from a distant planet. But first, you will need to find enough fuel crystals to power the rocket ship.

There are six different riddle areas in the Blast Off adventure. Find the riddles and explore the space colony by rolling your cursor around the screen and clicking things that move. You'll need to solve six riddles to earn the six fuel crystals needed to blast off.

2. Click to explore the mountain plateau.
3. Click to enter the rocket interior.
4. Click for help.
5. Click to enter the teapot science lab.

Fuel Crystals

Upon the completion of each I SPY riddle in the Blast Off adventure, you earn a fuel crystal. A clue appears at the bottom of the screen telling you where to find the fuel crystal. Search the screen and click the crystal to add it to your collection.

1. Use the clue to locate the fuel crystal.
2. Click for help.
3. Click to take your fuel crystal.
4. Click to return to the previous screen.

Fueling the Rocket Ship

All of the fuel crystals that you've collected can be found on a shelf inside the rocket ship. You will need all six crystals to power the rocket ship.

To fuel the ship, click a fuel crystal and drag it to the chute. Then, click to drop it into the chute and watch as the fuel gauge increases. After you have placed all six fuel crystals into the chute, click the lever above the Blast Off sign.

1. Click a crystal to pick it up.
2. Put the crystal in the chute.
3. Click for help.
4. Click to start the launch sequence.
5. Click to return to the previous screen.

Fixing the Circuit Board

You will need to fix the circuit board to blast off, but some of the parts are missing. The computer gives you clues that tell you the parts that are missing and where to find them. These parts could be on riddle screens or anywhere in the Blast Off environment.

When you have found all the parts, click and drag each one to its matching space on the circuit board. If it is the correct space, the part will snap into place. If not, it will snap back to its original position.

When the circuit board has been fixed you are ready to blast off!

1. Drop each part in the matching space.
2. The clue tells you which part to look for next.
3. Click for help.
4. The parts you have already found are here.
5. Click to return to the previous screen.

Starting a New Adventure

Once you have finished any of the three adventures, click the Home Button in the upper-left corner of the screen to return to the Main Menu. From there you can begin a new adventure or play a harder version of the same one.

Replay

There are three different versions of each of the three adventures in I SPY Fantasy. Each version contains new riddles and other surprises and is more challenging than the version before. There are a total of 54 unique riddles to solve.

Troubleshooting for Windows

Problem

Possible Cause

Solution

The I SPY Fantasy AutoPlay start-up screen does not appear when the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM is placed in your computer's CD-ROM drive.

AutoPlay is not enabled on your computer.

Double-click the My Computer icon on your computer's desktop. Right-click the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM icon in the My Computer window. Select Open from the pop-up menu. Double-click the AutoRun application to start I SPY Fantasy.

The I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM cannot be seen from Windows Explorer.

The CD-ROM drivers are not installed properly. (Other CD-ROMs also cannot be seen from Windows Explorer.)
The I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM is scratched or dirty
Open the Add New Hardware control panel and follow the instructions.
Make sure that the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM surface is free of all fingerprints and is not scratched.

I SPY Fantasy is running slowly on your computer.

Other programs are running.

Quit any other programs running on your computer and re-launch I SPY Fantasy.

You see the message "An attempt to reset your monitor settings to high color (16-bit) has failed."

I SPY Fantasy requires that your monitor settings be set to High Color (16-bit). An attempt was made to reset the color depth of your monitor and failed. Some computers require that these settings be changed manually.

Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the color palette to High Color (16-bit).

On opening the Display control panel and choosing the Settings tab, High Color (16-bit) is not an option under the palette menu.

On some computers, problems in the video driver software may prevent your monitor from resetting to High Color (16-bit).

Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on getting updated video drivers.

You see the message "An attempt to reset your monitor resolution settings to 640x480 has failed."

I SPY Fantasy requires that your monitor resolution settings be set to 640x480. An attempt was made to reset the color depth of your monitor and failed. Some computers require that these settings be changed manually.

Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the screen area setting to 640x480.

Audio is not functioning within I SPY Fantasy.

The speaker volume or system volume is turned all the way down.

Check your speaker volume control as well as the Windows system volume control.

When launching I SPY Fantasy, the message "No sound drivers found" appears and sound does not play.

Another application is running which is using the sound channel of your computer.

Your computer is missing a component required for audio playback.
Quit all applications on your computer and restart I SPY Fantasy. Use the Alt + Tab keys to cycle through open applications and shut down.

Double-click the dxsetup.exe file in the DirectX8 directory on the I SPY Fantasy CD. Proceed through the installation of DirectX.

Audio still does not function correctly within I SPY Fantasy after trying all of the steps above.

On some computers, problems in the audio driver software may prevent I SPY Fantasy from playing sound correctly.

Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on getting updated audio drivers.

The installation of I SPY Fantasy quits or I SPY Fantasy fails during the installation.

You are logged onto your computer without administrative rights.
Your computer does not have enough free disk space to install I SPY Fantasy.
Log onto your computer as a user with administrative rights and re-install I SPY Fantasy. (Administrative rights allow users read and write access to their computers.)
Verify that you have at least 20 MB of free disk space on the computer drive you are using to install I SPY Fantasy.

Troubleshooting for Macintosh

The I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM cannot be seen when inserted into your Macintosh.

The I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM is scratched or dirty.

Make sure that the I SPY Fantasy CD-ROM surface is free of all fingerprints and is not scratched.

You see this message: "There is not enough memory to open I SPY Fantasy."

Other applications are running.
For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, Virtual Memory may be off.
Quit any other running applications and re-launch I SPY Fantasy.
In Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, turn on Virtual Memory using the Memory control panel. Increase the amount of Virtual Memory used by your computer and restart your Macintosh.

I SPY Fantasy is running slowly.

Other programs are running.
For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, Virtual Memory may be off.
For Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, File Sharing is on.
Quit any other running applications and re-launch I SPY Fantasy.
In Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, turn on Virtual Memory using the Memory control panel. Increase the amount of Virtual Memory used by your computer and restart your Macintosh.
In Mac Operating Systems 8.6 - 9.2, open the File Sharing Setup control panel and turn off File Sharing.

The installation of I SPY Fantasy quits or I SPY Fantasy fails during the installation.

Your computer does not have enough free disk space to install I SPY Fantasy. (Administrative rights allow users read and write access to their computers.)
Log onto your computer as a user with administrative rights and re-install I SPY Fantasy.
